Scholarships to attend Post-graduate Course entitled:
Applied Anthropology in Development Processes
1. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) is financing eighteen (18) scholarships for a University Course on: Applied Anthropology in Development processes. The Course is organized by the Department of Communication and Social Research at the University of Rome , “La Sapienza”. The course is tentatively scheduled to begin on 17 January 2011 and will last four months. The beginning of “face to face” teaching activities is envisaged on February. Participants from the following countries are eligible to apply:
Africa: Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau , Mozambique , Niger , Senegal , and Uganda
North Africa: Egypt, Morocco , and Tunisia
Middle East: Lebanon, Palestine
Asia e Oceania: Afghanistan, Myanmar , Pakistan , and Vietnam
The scholarship will cover a three month period, including:
· Round trip air ticket,
Food and miscellaneous expenses
Accommodation,
All fees and taxes due to the Roma University ,
A two weeks full immersion Italian language course at the beginning of the course.
The applicant should have a first level university degree equivalent to an Italian laurea triennale. The course administrators will determine whether participants’ degrees can be consider as equivalent to the Italian laurea triennale.
The applicant should be no more than thirty three (33) years old.
The deadline for applications is 30th of November 2010. The applications should be submitted to the Italian Embassy of the resident countries of the applicants by 30th of November 2010.

2. Objective and organization of the Course
The objective of the Course is to train specialists to be employed in connection with development assistance programmes in the so-called developing countries. It will cover material and fieldwork methods from the fields of anthropology, sociology, and political science. The course will seek to transmit basic skills in applied anthropology. These skills and methods will also be analyzed from a critical standpoint, looking at their significance and their theoretical usefulness. Then it will examine and discuss related specific themes such as: poverty, hunger, community, local development, and growth.
Particular attention will be dedicated to reflections on the potential role that anthropology can play in finding solutions to real problems in local communities. Emphasis will be placed on using anthropology as an analytical approach to address problems in society today. The course methodology will combine theory and practice. It will include face-to-face instruction, practical exercises, group work, and descriptions of real life applications by development practitioners.
The course includes training on the ground in fieldwork under the supervision of specialized teachers and trainers who provide students with analytical frameworks that can be used for theoretical and applied anthropology. The course is intended to serve as professional training that will enable participants to interact with their peers in other disciplines and to appreciate how other perspectives can contribute to their work in applied anthropology. And, they will learn how they can provide inputs to influence the work of colleagues in other disciplines.
The training received could facilitate employment in the following fields:
· National consultant or resource person for project design and implementation
· Basic anthropological research
· Analysis of conflicts and cultural systems
· Visual Anthropology
· Sustainable tourism
Official language of the course: English.
Total teaching hours of the course: 550 hours .
The course covers six teaching areas for a total of 550 hours. It will entitle the student to receive 20 Credits, considered Crediti Formativi Universitari, that will be recognized by other Italian university courses.
Teaching will be done by (i) professors from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and from other Italian and European universities; and ii) by international experts working in UN Agencies such as FAO, IFAD and WFP.

3. Methodology
The course will be organized into two phases:
First phase (e-learning)
The selected students will follow an e-learning course in their countries. This phase will last three weeks with a total of 60 teaching hours. Students in their countries will download teaching material and prepare related assignments to be sent back to Rome University . This first part of the course will be used to acquaint students with some basic principles of anthropology and applied anthropology in development projects.
Second Phase (at Rome University )
Students will travel to Rome to attend the second phase including lessons and seminars. During this time they will also conduct fieldwork in the City of Rome . The second phase will last approximately three months. During the first two weeks, a full immersion Italian language course will be provided for foreigners students. The remaining eleven weeks will be used to deepen themes in anthropology and development projects. The following table gives a general view of the course organization.

Students who have successfully completed the course, including full attendance at lessons seminars and workshops will be provided with an certificate of acquired competence, referred to as “Attestato delle competenze acquisite” as per University rules.
Lessons will be held in English every day from Monday to Friday. Each day there will be three hours with a professor and two hours of seminars and workshops. Students are expected to study individually at least two hours per day. Study will be mostly based on papers and other materials, in English, that professors will distribute prior to a given lesson.
· Final Test. At the end of the course the student will prepare a paper of about 10,000 words under the supervision of a tutor.
· Students will have an Attestato di Frequenza legally recognized according with the Italian law: Art. 16 del D.P.R. 10.3.82 n. 162.
· Deadline for application: 30th of November 2010.
· A total of 18 students will be admitted to the course
· Applicants should have a university degree equivalent to an Italian laurea triennale.
· Applicants should be no more than 33 years old
· The course will begin on or about 17 January 2011
